Bidriware – An Overview

Bidriware is an exquisite metal handicraft that originates from Bidar, Karnataka. The craft developed during the 14th century under the patronage of the Bahmani Sultans and is celebrated for its striking visual contrast, refined detailing, and distinctive black-and-silver appearance. Over centuries, Bidriware has come to represent a unique blend of Persian, Islamic, and Indian artistic traditions.

Material and Technique

Bidriware is crafted using a special alloy primarily composed of zinc and copper, usually in a ratio of 16:1. After casting, the object undergoes a unique oxidation process that gives it a deep, matte black finish. This process involves treating the metal with a special soil sourced from an ancient fort area in Bidar, believed to contain properties essential for achieving the signature black color.

Once blackened, skilled artisans meticulously engrave intricate patterns onto the surface. These designs—often inspired by floral motifs, geometric patterns, calligraphy, and Persian art—are then carefully inlaid with thin strips or sheets of pure silver. The piece is finally polished to enhance the brilliance of the silver against the dark background, resulting in Bidriware’s iconic and elegant finish.

Geographical Indication (GI) Status

Bidriware was awarded the Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2006, officially recognizing its unique geographical origin and traditional production techniques. The GI status helps protect the craft from imitation, ensures authenticity, and supports the livelihood of local artisans by preserving this centuries-old heritage.

Bidriware continues to stand as a timeless symbol of India’s rich metalcraft tradition, admired both nationally and internationally for its craftsmanship, cultural depth, and enduring beauty.
